Unconventional Media

Any space that is visible can be used to place advertising messages. When ads ae not placed in the media or on out-of-home networks it is sometimes referred to as "unconventional media".

Using unconventional media has two main advantages:

  • It is often cheaper than regular media
  • If done in a clever way it will attract more attention than regular media and may be perceived as "cool" or "clever" by consumers.

Below are some examples of some interesting uses of space for advertising.

Body parts are ads are attention grabbing and are of course used. Here is a campaign from New Zealand Airline in 2009.

If your target market is heterosexual males you will not miss anyone with this alternative media placement.

Here are two examples of ads on food. Eggs with an advertising for a TV show:

Ads in fortune cookies. If the "fortune" is clever it is worth a try.

Here are great examples of clever uses of spaces where the space is an integral part of the ad. Here an ad for hair products.

This one looks like a lot of work but the impact is definitely there.

The integration of the space and the product advertised is great here.

Close to airports more and more fields are dedicated to advertising rather than agriculture. Close to an important airports fields can potentially attract several millions eyeballs par year.

Hhere a nice example from Syngenta. Syngenta is an agriculture company so the use of a field makes a lot of sense.

Fantastic example of placement for a map software. It is so surprising I wonder if it does not represent a danger for traffic.

Yoga anyone? Nice work....

I can't think of any brand for which this space would be flattering.

This is one of my favorites. Each step taken in the sand will leave the mark of the logo embossed on the sole of these thong sandals.
